How Motor Oil Protects Your Engine

To help you better understand what happens if you don’t change your oil, it’s important to know how oil works in the first place. At its simplest level, motor oil is intended to provide lubrication for your engine. As you drive around Seward, the motor oil will coat many moving parts in your vehicle to ensure that everything is running smoothly. Some noteworthy information about how motor oil protects your engine can be found below:

  • Motor oil reduces the amount of friction in your engine, allowing for less wear and tear.
  • Some motor oils contain detergents to keep your engine cleaner.
  • In addition to lubrication, motor oil can often neutralize acids that form from fuels, allowing for better engine performance.

How to Change Your Oil

Before finding out what happens if you don’t get your oil changed, you can change your engine oil in your own Milford home. All you need is a few simple tools, the correct motor oil, an oil filter for your vehicle, and you’re good to go. Of course, if you don’t want to get your hands dirty, we recommend visiting our service center for a professional oil change service. If you must change your oil on your own, here’s how to do it:

  1. Lift your vehicle using ramps or a combination of a jack and jack stands. Make sure you understand the jacking points of your vehicle before you jack it up.
  2. Find the oil drain plug underneath your vehicle.
  3. Using an oil catch, place it directly underneath the plug and begin to slowly unscrew the oil drain plug.
  4. Once all the oil has been drained, locate your oil filter and begin removing it. Note that some oil may drip as you remove the oil filter.
  5. With a new oil filter, put a small amount of oil on the rubber seal, and place the new oil filter into the correct location. Don’t overtighten the new oil filter, and just tighten it by hand.
  6. Lower your vehicle, and look for the oil cap underneath the hood.
  7. Remove the oil cap, and replace it with new oil. Make sure you’re using the correct oil type, and ensure that the amount of oil you’re using is what’s recommended in the owner’s manual.
  8. Check your oil levels, and once you tighten down the oil cap, you should be all set!
